Barcelona fans believe Lionel Messi didn’t do well enough to be voted the team’s best player of the season despite scoring 23 goals and 21 assists in 32 La Liga appearances.
The 33-year-old scored in his side’s last home defeat to Osasuna during the week but his goal was not enough to save the Catalans from defeat at Camp Nou.
After the defeat that led to Real Madrid clinch their 34th La Liga title earlier this week, the Argentine lashed out at the Catalans, saying it was the worst team on over a decade.
He also made reference to their Champions League debacles to Roma in 2018 and Liverpool in 2019 as examples of the failures of the team in recent times – saying they were “weak” and “lacked intensity”.
Meanwhile, the poll conducted by Spanish news outlet Marca on the 22 first team players revealed the German goalkeeper outshined Messi this season.
Teenage sensations Riqui Puig and Ansu Fati were also ranked highly in the poll, while French trio Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele and Samuel Umtiti make up three of the bottom five places.
Messi was clearly angry after the Osasuna loss, telling reporters: “I said a while ago that if we carry on like this it will be very hard for us to win the Champions League.
